Collections

SFSMA has digitized a number of private and publicly available collections of cue sheets and sheet music, and has also created collections of related materials.

Chuck Berg Silent Film Music Collection
Charles “Chuck” Berg (1941–2016), who taught film and media studies at the University of Kansas staring in 1977, donated his substantial music collections to KU’s Gorton Music and Dance Library in 2000. Digitized with the support of a University of Kansas General Research Fund grant.

Greg Breed Collection
Breed is a theater organist in San Diego and one of SFSMA’s earliest contributors of sheet music and photoplay albums.

Carl Braun Collection
Braun played at the Paramount and Hyperion theaters in New Haven, CT. Read more about his life in a remembrance by his son Ted Braun.

Claire Hamack Collection
Hamack (1898-1977) was a cinema organist first in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where she was the featured organist at the Homewood Theater.

Silent Film Presentations/Ben Model Collection
Silent Film accompanist Ben Model’s collection of more than 300 pieces and 2300 instrumental parts, including rare materials from Europe. Digitized with the support of a 2016 Grammy Foundation Preservation Grant.

Adele V. Sullivan Collection
Sullivan (c.1883-1964) was the organist for the Longmont Theatre in Colorado. Sullivan’s is one of the few collections nationwide that includes not just albums of photoplay music, sheet music, and traditional cue sheets, but also cue sheets for phonograph records.

Melody Magazine Collection
The complete run of Melody Magazine (1917-1930), which provided information on cinema accompaniment and music for use in the theater.
